Sample Letter to Senator/Congressperson ("Operation, Not By Might, Nor My Power")

Sample letter to send to your Senator or Congressperson on the occasion of "Operation Not By Might, Nor By Power" (December 17, 2009):

Dear ____________________,

Along with people of faith and conscience throughout America, I am writing to you to voice my protest over Israel’s collective punishment of the Palestinian people in Gaza. Since Hamas’ electoral victory in January 2006, Israel has subjected the Gaza Strip to an increasingly intolerable blockade that restricts Gaza's ability to import food, fuel and other essential materials, and to export finished products. As a result, the Gazan economy has completely collapsed. Most of Gaza's industrial plants have been forced to close, further contributing to already high levels of unemployment and poverty and rising levels of childhood malnutrition.

One year ago, Israel launched a massive military assault against Gaza. While I understand that every nation has the duty to protect its citizens and that the rocket attacks against Israeli civilians in the south had grown intolerable, I deplore the use of much greater violence by the Israeli government, which caused the deaths of over 1,300 Palestinians, including large numbers of civilians. Since the end of Israel's recent military campaign, the continuing blockade has made it impossible for Gazans to rebuild and the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza has grown all the more dire.

As an American citizen I urge you, as a leader of our nation, to call on the Israeli government to immediately lift the blockade. In the same way, I also urge you to call on Israel to engage with all relevant Palestinian parties - including Hamas - to help bring about a just and peaceful solution to this tragic conflict.

Sincerely,
